The protest on Saturday — one of a series of weekly protests in Peterborough organized by independent MPP Randy Hillier — attracted somewhere around 600 from out of the region. Meanwhile, the rest of the world fired back, calling Randy Hillier and his followers “bozos” and describing his clown convention as nothing more than a publicly funded cult where the vulnerable are exploited for the gain of the leader.
One former cult member, who cannot be identified due to on-going court proceedings involving his children, spoke out about the danger of Hillier’s rhetoric.
“You go to these rallies and are told nothing can take your rights away. But then someone takes your picture and sends it to your boss, or your regulator, Children's Aid Society, or in my case, my ex. Sure you don’t lose your rights, but you lose privileges. I can’t see my kids in person anymore because I shared Randy Hillier’s garbage. I don’t have a right to see my kids if I’m going to be putting them in danger. Restaurants don’t have a right to a liquor licence. Unpaid fines can cause big problems too. What’s worse is I can’t even warn others, or I’d be violating the court order.”
In their remarks, the rest of the world pleaded with Hillier’s followers to think about the long-term consequences of remaining in his cult.
“It’s very disturbing to see how Hillier’s tactics have been used to prey on the vulnerable, people who have nothing left. Are they still having a good time after these rallies? The answer is no, but at that point they feel too invested. They’ve alienated themselves from their community and think they don’t have a choice anymore.” They said Hillier, who is paid with public funds, is using his office to harm hard-working people in his constituency and beyond.
“Your job is not supposed to be biased, like it has been: Your job is to represent the people in your riding,” the rest of the world said. “And by the looks of things, you’re not representing anyone very well. So we’re coming for your job, Randy — it’s time to go. Bye-bye.”
The rest of the world also said it’s a myth to think you have an absolute right to anything.
“This is the definition of entitlement and given the vulnerable nature of these cult members, they will likely have to learn the hard way that nobody owes them anything, ever” they said.
